Catalogue Note

“Light is the mother of every colour”

Piero Dorazio dedicated his entire life to the study of colour. He distanced himself from the figurative painting of the ‘Fronte delle Nuovi Arti’ and the ‘Forma 1’ group, which was founded in Rome in April 1947, to investigate instead the optical and sensory characteristics of colour.

Senza titolo dates back to a crucial year in Dorazio’s chromatic research, in which the idea of the grid is beginning to develop and the colour has gained a vital autonomy that can only be found in his works. The luminous impact of the white, skillfully circumscribed by dark brushstrokes that highlight its brilliance, make the touches of colour, although sparse, the real protagonists of the canvas.
