The year 1947 marks not only the return of Lucio Fontana from Argentina but also the birth of the "Spatial Movement". This Battaglia of 1947 in glazed terracotta was executed by Fontana on his return to Italy, during his stay in Albisola, where he continued his research on the use of ceramics and of which he resumed fervently the production.
Battaglia of 1947 relates to the artist’s informal treatment of the material and the subject, thus leading his previous intuitions of material expression to extreme consequences. The dialectical relationship with space that is suggested by the dynamism of the work already foresees the results that shortly after marks his Concetto spaziale.
