Kanakavatsa seated in a three-quarter pose on a decorative carved throne, dressed in red, orange and green undulating silk robes, a pink halo surrounding his head, holding in both hands a jeweled lasso, a selection of manuscripts on a table placed to the side of the throne, the Naga King in a lake above offering Kanakavatsa a jewel, all set in an arranged landscape of green and blue mountains with foliage and trees  Himalayan Art Resources item no. 13604.

Acquired 1974.

Condition

In good overall condition. With creasing and abrasion throughout. Pinhole in halo above the main figure. A water stain running vertically down the left third of the painting. Mounted in original brocade which is torn and frayed. (61 ¾ by 31 ¾ in).

See HAR# 3314500 from the same set which now belongs to the Museum of Culture in Basel, Switzerland and HAR #31511 which is in a private collection.

The complete set of paintings, of which there are twenty-three in total, includes compositions of Shakyamuni Buddha as the centerpiece, the sixteen arhats, the attendant Dharmatala and the patron Hvashang, and the Four Guardian Kings of the Directions.
