  • 58 x 42 cm
Dharmatala with black hair piled on the top of his head, the right hand holding a flywhisk with a red handle, the left hand holding a red and gold water flask, wearing a long blue robe held together with an orange sash, on his back he carries a red travelling case topped with a circular orange and red fringed canopy, accompanied by an orange striped tiger in a lush blue and green mountainous landscape, below in front to the right Dhritarashtra, Guardian of the East, white in color, strumming a lute, adorned with a golden crown decorated with jewels and earrings, tassels and ribbons, his head surrounded by a flaming aureole, richly attired in brocaded garments, to the left Virudhaka, Guardian of the South, blue in color with large bulbous eyes gazing to the side, the right hand holding an erect sword, the left holding a flaming jewel, adorned with an ornate golden jeweled crown, the flaming aureole surrounded further by smoking dark clouds, richly adorned in royal attire of silks and brocades Himalayan Art Resources item no. 13640.

Condition

In good overall condition. With areas of accretion and surface abrasion throughout. Water damage visible in the right quarter of the painting on verso running vertically from the top to the bottom in a one inch band. Almost complete loss to the small Buddha figure in upper center. Verso coated in varnish.
