Catalogue Note

After Thadée and Misia Natanson’s divorce, Vuillard became closer to Jos Hessel, the director of Galerie Bernheim, and his wife Lucie. He would remain close throughout his life to this couple, who were collectors and patrons, and he would make Lucie his new muse, confidant, and one of the main subjects of his portraits.
