Catalogue Note

This is one of the earliest works in a series of landscapes that Slevogt executed in Godramstein between 1909 and 1913. Peter Finkler, the artist's father-in-law, owned a house in Godramstein in South Germany, surrounded by a verdant landscape of rolling hills in which Slevogt found inspiration for a number of paintings. It was during those years that the artist created his most accomplished Impressionist paintings and made a vital contribution to the development of German Impressionism, alongside such artists as Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth.
