Condition

I. This work is in good condition overall, taking its age into account. The colors are vibrant, and the media layer is stable. The sheet is faintly yellowed overall. A few very faint pinpoint spots of foxing are present to the right and left of the figure. A faint band of mat burn is present along the extreme upper and left edges of the sheet. II. This work is in good condition overall, taking its age into account. The colors are vibrant, and the media layer is stable. The sheet is faintly yellowed and very lightly soiled overall. A fine band of mat burn is present along the extreme left, right and upper edges of the sheet. Two dark brown pinpoint surface deposits are present in the lower right quadrant.

Catalogue Note

i. This image appears in the mural Art and Culture of the Pacific painted by Covarrubias in 1938 as one of a cycle of six murals featuring maps of the Pacific region entitled Pageant of the Pacific, commissioned for the 1940 Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco, California. Five of these murals survive and are held in the collection of the De Young Museum in San Francisco.
