Condition

The canvas is not lined. The surface is slightly dirty. The canvas is slightly undulating in all four corners. In the white pigments of the sky, there is some thin stable craquelure. In the green pigments of the water two inches to the right of the date, there is a pindot spot of accretion. In the upper right corner, there is a pindot remnant of gold gilding, likely from a prior framing. Under UV light, no inpainting is apparent. The work is in good condition.

Catalogue Note

“Jongkind is beginning to make us digest a kind of painting of which the hard outer skin hides an excellent and most tasty fruit. I too have profited by coming in the door which he already had forced, and I have begun, albeit timidly, to present my seascapes.” —Eugène Boudin
