Condition
This work is in very good condition overall. The canvas is unlined and well-stretched. The colors are vibrant, and the media layer and all areas of impasto are stable. A few minor spots of pigment loss are present at the extreme upper right edge. Under ultraviolet light inspection, no evidence of inpainting becomes apparent.

Catalogue Note
"Lam took pleasure in painting several aspects of a single place when its landscape particularly struck his attention... It was the streets of Cuenca, with their famous casas colgadas (suspended houses) that truly attracted Lam. He painted them several times over, attempting to capture the very essence of Spain: its inscrutible austerity, rigidity and faith." Maria-Luïsa Borràs, "Lam in Spain," in Wifredo Lam: Catalogue Raisonné of the Painted Work, vol. I, Paris, 1996, p. 23
