Condition
This work may have never been restored or cleaned. It is very loosely stretched on its stretcher, and there are visible waves to the surface running horizontally throughout the work. There are some horizontal cracks in the forehead and in the hair, and across the center corresponding with the crossbar of the stretcher. There is one paint loss beneath the blue diamond shape in the center of the right side, and another small scratch on the upper right edge. There is another small loss in the hair in the upper center about 1 1/2 inches from the top edge. It is recommended that the work be relaxed and consolidated in order to lessen the waves and raised cracking, but the condition is very good overall.

Catalogue Note
“I know of no greater tribute to the compelling sensuous loveliness of Portinari’s art than the annihilation of the reasoning and critical faculties of the mind which, I believe, all undergo on seeing it. Color, and all that that in terms of harmony and dissonance and light and dark involves, is there; and all that light and shade and color make: a world of living beings… The world of Portinari: as compelled by it, in thought, we move about in it, with wonder…” Rockwell Kent, Portinari: His Life and Art, Chicago, 1940, p. 7
