Catalogue Note

Patek Philippe
Reference 5074 and 5013 When one thinks of attributes that excite collectors of Patek Philippe perhaps high on the list are pink cases, black dials and minute repeaters. Generally speaking they represent the least frequently found characteristics of Patek’s inventory. The overall aesthetic of a watch largely constitutes its case and dial and it must be accepted that there is no more pleasing combination than a crisp black dial and vibrant pink gold case. Add to this one of the most desirable and rare complications, the minute repeater, and you have a watch that will catch the eye of even the most discerning of connoisseurs. Suffice to say the following two lots feature all of these attributes, and to superb effect.

The first, the reference 5013 is one of the rarest complicated watches made by Patek and research shows that as few as 101 pieces were ever produced. Of these, perhaps 20 were forged in pink gold, 6 of which have been identified back to the market. Its tonneau form case provides a very satisfying vintage aesthetic, and was the first minute repeater to feature a self-winding caliber and calendar with retrograde display.

The 5074 is rarer still. Research suggests that less than 100 pieces were ever made and that as few only 8 pieces have returned to auction, and only one of these with a pink gold case. Released in 2001, it has a much sportier look and feel, with a large 42 mm circular case, this watch impresses further housing a perpetual calendar as well as a minute repeater.

Uniting two complications mastered by Patek Philippe, reference 5074 features a perpetual calendar and a minute repeater that stands out with remarkable sonority. Striking with incomparably pure sound, the watch features cathedral gongs that optimize the acoustic quality of a minute repeater. The cathedral gongs are shaped to encircle the movement not just once, but nearly twice, resulting in a rich tone with particularly long reverberation. Furthermore giving the watch better acoustic characteristics to produce melodious chimes of crystal-clear quality.

Due to the complexity of its movement, production for the reference 5074 is extremely limited to a very small quantity per year.

Complete with Certificate of Origin, additional case back, setting pin and presentation box, the present watch offers the finest acoustics and is enchantingly refined and is in excellent condition with hardly any wear at all.
