Description
- DAYTONA "PAUL NEWMAN", REFERENCE 6262 A STAINLESS STEEL CHRONOGRAPH WRISTWATCH WITH EXOTIC DIAL AND BRACELET, CIRCA 1970
Dial: white exotic Calibre: cal. 727 mechanical, 17 jewelsCase: stainless steel, screw down case back Case number: 2'475'251 Closure: stainless steel Rolex Oyster bracelet and folding clasp Size: 36 mm diameter, bracelet length approximately 175 mm Signed: case, dial and movement
Condition
The movement is in working condition at the time of cataloguing. All functions are working properly. The present watch is fresh to the market and is consigned by the original owner. The dial is in beautiful condition with all lume plots consistent in size and aged in the same way throughout. There is just some very minor discolouration under some of the lumes around the dial. All lumes react very well under UV light. The bezel is nice and fat and still retains almost all of its black enamel with only a minor loss at 200. The case is in very crisp condition with lugs that retain their full proportion with only light surface wear throughout. The bracelet is stamped 1.71. All wear to the case and bracelet is minor and more than consistent with the age of the watch. The number between the lugs are very crisp and easy to read without a loupe. The case back with very crisp milled edges. Inside the case back is stamped 6263 and overall a terrific example of a Paul Newman 6262. Please note that the movement has not been tested for the accuracy of time and may need a service at the buyer's expense. Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement and we do not guarantee the authenticity of any individual component parts since subsequent repairs and restoration work may have resulted in the replacement of original parts. Furthermore, the watch may not come with its original manufacturers strap or band. Catalogue Note
The reference 6262, as well as its cousin 6264, had the shortest production period and were available only for approximately two years, between the very end of the 1960's and 1972. The reference 6262 can be considered as the bridge between the early and the late vintage Rolex Daytona models. Indeed, it combines the pump pushers such as the 6239, the first Daytona, and the 727 Valjoux calibre, the final evolution of the movement which was also housed in the 6263 and 6265 models.
