Catalogue Note

Patek Philippe Rare Handcrafts Exquisitely and delicately crafted the following lots, both reference 5075, belong to Patek Philippe's 'Rare Handcrafts' series. Both adorned with floral dials and crafted in cloisonné enamel a technique that is as tricky to master as it is to execute. Demanding the highest level of skill and artisanship the enamel fills shapes created from thin gold wire. Enamels of different colours are added and fired as many as 12 times depending of the types and numbers of colours used.

While several watches may be produced depicting the same subject, the process or colouring the dials, done entirely by hand, mean that no two dials are strictly alike. It is therefore fair to say in this regard these watches are fundamentally unique.

The hibiscus, or Chinese Rose as it is also widely known, is an important symbol in Chinese culture representing glory, fame and splendor. Known to change colour, it also speaks to the fleeting nature of these attributes, and it is this which the enameller has tried to capture. Interestingly, and somewhat ironically however, enamel historically was a preferred medium due to its nature of never fading in vibrancy.
