Collaborating with projects in a philanthropic way while testing the limits of their products, Rolex had provided 20 prototype watches to a group of expeditionist lead by Edmund Hillary, Charles Evans and Alfred Gregory to conquer Mount Everest in 1952. Those 20 prototype watches eventually led Rolex to produce a successful and highly sought after timepiece known both for its minimalistic design perspective and wearability known as the Explorer. This lovely reference 1016 is in remarkable original condition. With a possible light polishing in the past, the case is crisp and well proportioned. The luminous plots on the dials and hands have aged beautifully to a warm cream color. Furthermore its is presented with a letter and photos from the family of the original owner, which enhances the collectability of the present watch.
