The movement is in working condition at the time of cataloguing. The mahogany-box is complete with all handle and screws, however minor wear is spotted to the top cover and back corners. The clock is in very good overall condition for its age and the dial is very clean, however the case has signs of oxidization. The outer box with wear throughout. Please note that the movement has not been tested for the accuracy of time and may need a service at the buyer's expense. Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement and we do not guarantee the authenticity of any individual component parts since subsequent repairs and restoration work may have resulted in the replacement of original parts. Developed in the 18th century the marine chronometer was a crucial tool to accurately measure time over a long sea voyage and was a major technical achievement then. Made approximately around the WWII period, the present clock is preserved in a very good overall condition for its age.
