Catalogue Note

The present lot, a reference 6239, represents the first model of Daytona ever produced by Rolex and the reference most sought after and celebrated by collectors worldwide. Introduced in 1963/4 it had a relatively limited production run of only 5 years, being discontinued in 1969. It is estimated that approximately 14,000 units were produced of this reference, with as few as 300 made in gold. Once one takes into consideration the fact that this particular watch features the Paul Newman dial, it can be safely assumed that it represents a very tiny portion of the overall production, making it very rare indeed. This 6239 is also presented in very honest condition, and while the numerals to the bezel have lost their colour, this actually provides the watch with a different and interesting aesthetic. The dial too is in superb condition, and the colourway in combination with the yellow gold case serves to emphasise the art deco nature of its design.
