Description

modelled after an archaic jade cong, each long edge of the square-sectioned body with eight raised horizontal bands within a raised rectangular frame, all supported on a short foot and surmounted by a gently tapered neck, covered overall save for the footring with a unctuous celadon glaze draining to pale bluish-white at the raised edges

Provenance

An old Japanese collection.
Sotheby's Hong Kong, 4th April 2012, lot 3122.

Condition

This vase is in generally good condition, with the exception of a triangular area of restoration with associated over-spray (approx. 1.3 x 1.5 cm) to one corner of the shoulder, and a small bruise to the glaze (approx. 0.4 cm) to one of the lower edges, both of which are visible under the UV light. There are some shallow glaze crackles, in particular to the interior of mouthrim along the the luting line, a horizontal one to the mid-section of one side, and two further stained vertical ones to the edge of the same side. There are also light surface wear and minor firing imperfections, including glaze gaps to the extremities, iron spots and a circular firing crack on the interior of the footring on the base. The actual colour is more of a pale bluish tone compared to the catalogue illustration.
