Catalogue Note

Colonial surveyor and cartographer Lewis Evans's Bible, signed by him twice and with Evans family history recorded on a blank. On the general title Evans has signed "Lewis Evans 1744"; and on the New Testament title he has signed "L. Evans". Welch-born Evans (c. 1700–1756) settled in Philadelphia and was a friend of Benjamin Franklin. His most important work is A General Map of the Middle British Colonies in America (1755).
