Catalogue Note

The present lot relates to Pugin designs for chairs for the Houses of Parliament from 1847-50 (Paul Attenbury, A.W.N. Pugin, Master of Gothic Revival, London, 1995, p.322). In 1850 Pugin wrote to Crace, the cabinetmaker and decorator, with a sketch of a chair with the same chamfered legs. Pugin wrote 'Mr Barry wants a Pattern chair for the Commons lobbies. His idea is a light but strong/chamfered chair' (op. cit. p. 335).
