Catalogue Note

The present work is a larger version of an oil on panel painted in 1913 on Fergusson and Peploe's last sketching holiday together. Stylistically this later version appears to date from the 1930s, when Fergusson was living in Paris and making regular summer visits to the South of France. In Cassis from the West Fergusson has explored the rhythmic forms of the green hills of Thorenc contrasted with the angularity of the red roofed buildings of the town itself. The work also demonstrates the influence of Cézanne and the Cubists presented in Fergusson's unique visual style.
