Condition

The canvas is unlined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is very slightly discoloured. The paint surface has slightly thinned throughout. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some retouchings: small spots scattered in the figure, most notably his left arm, as well as along the left margin; a few pin prick spots scattered in the sky; and scattered throughout the foreground.

Catalogue Note

A smaller, very similar composition on panel is in a private collection, England, and is published in Raymond Lister's catalogue raisonné of George Richmond's œuvre, and dated circa 1828.The subject matter is taken from Genesis 24:63, 'And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide'; it is one of a number of Biblical subjects the artist painted during his Shoreham period. 1 R.
