Catalogue Note

The Neoclassical architecture style facade, simply enhanced with gilt bronze mounts, is a late example of the Greek style that appeared in France around 1760 and lasted until the end of the 1770s. Our commode has several elements typical of Pierre Gernier's style, who was an advocate of Greek trends. Our drawers present a contrast of veining from two different woods (namely on our light Honduran mahogany and Santo Dominican mahogany commode) that we find on several furnitures by Garnier (see C. Huchet de Quénetain, Pierre Garnier, Paris, 2003, pp. 15 and 110). The modest facade is also reminiscent of several pieces of furniture by this cabinetmaker, such as a commode and a desk (see C. Huchet de Quenetain, ibid., pp. 97 and 99).

The Jacob Frères Rue Meslée stamp, used between 1796 and 1830, is probably explained by a restoration that Georges Jacob II and François-Honoré had executed on our commode during these years.
