Catalogue Note

These corner cupboards are identical to those delivered for Queen Marie-Antoinette's garde-robe in herappartment at the château des Tuileries, identified by Pierre Verlet (see Le Mobilier Royal Français, 1955, p. 95, et 1990, t. IV, n°27, pp. 105-106). Her private garde-meuble officer, Bonnefoy du Plan, ordered six corner cupboards for the Queen Tuileries appartment in October 1784: they were made in plain moulded mahogany by Riesener, "l'extérieur formant pilastre de deux côtés". The cabinetmaker also realised six matching shelves in order that some porcelain vases could be displayed. The bill was eventually paid by the Crown garde-meuble and the pieces were inscribed with the number 3365/6.
The pair identified by P. Verlet was sold in Drouot, étude Rieunier et Bailly-Pommery, 17 June 2002, lot 146 ; the location of the last four is unknown.
Another pair of similar corner cupboards by Riesener, opening by one drawer and one door, delivered for Queen Marie-Antoinette at the Petit Trianon, was bought by the Château de Versailles at auction in Paris, étude Fraysse, 18 November 2015, lot 135.
