Provenance

Sold in Paris, étude Millon et Jutheau, 12 March 1984, lot 64

Condition

The photograph is too contrasted, especially on the printed catalogue, and does not convey the beautiful timber of satiné. There are traces of old restorations to the veneer, especially at the right end of the lower drawer and on the right leg below. The gilt-bronze mounts are scarcely tarnished and slightly rubbed on the most exposed areas. The marble top with small scattered edge chips (not distracting). Very attractive model in good overall condition.

Catalogue Note

Roger Vandercruse dit La Croix, received master in 1755. This model is unequivocally inspired by the commodes "à la Grecque" realized for Madame de Pompadour in the late 1750s by Jean-François Oeben, La Croix's brother-in-law. Both used to work often together until Oeben's death in 1763.

From the 1770s, La Croix began to use more and more mahogany and satiné veneer, instead of marquetry, such as on our commode. The gilt-bronze ornements, reduced to the minimum, enhanced the beauty and the brightness of the veneer (see C. Roinet, Roger Vandercruse dit La Croix, Paris, 2000, p. 102).

Two similar commodes stamped by La Croix were sold at Sotheby's in Monaco, 11 December 1999, lot 137, and 24 June 2000, lot 69. More recently, another model was sold 35 000 € at Koller in Zurich, 27 September 2018, lot 1106.
