Catalogue Note
In the year VI of the Revolutionary calendar, between January and early May 1798, Corbet modelled a bust of the young general. The original plaster, perhaps the one in the Fine Arts Museum of Lille (inv. Sc. 160), was exhibited in the 1798 Salon (the year VII) and a marble (now lost) in the 1800 Salon (the year IX). Several versions are known: one cut at the base of the shoulders, the face to the right and a fold of the coat wrapped on the right shoulder; another, the model of our bronze, with the face to the left and the drapery over the left shoulder; a third as a larger full bust. A bronze of he same version than the present one was exhibited in the J. B. Speed Art Museum, Louisville, in 1971 (Victor D. Spark collection). Another is in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (see E. Silber, Sculpture in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, 1987, no. 64). Another was exhibited in Japan, in Tokyo-Nagoya-Osaka, in 1977 (no. 330).
