Condition

Please note that the lot is now dated second half of the 19th century. The illustration of the catalogue is accurate. Good overall condition. The gilding is tarnished and very slightly rubbed. It would benefit from a gentle cleaning. Very impressive model with a nice chasing.

Catalogue Note

A pair of sconces signed by Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain (one illustrated), formerly belonging to the gallery Didier Aaron, has a structure almost identical to ours, but with three lights and a lion muffle on the barrel. The composition evokes the drawings of his cousin, the ornamentalist and foundry master Jean-Louis Prieur where we find the imposing garlands, arms section square. The lion-headed model seems to be more widespread since it is found in various sales, Ader-Picard-Tajan, December 5, 1989, lot 92; Christies New York, November 5, 1989, lot 67 (signed), Picard study, December 21, 1994, lot 67; Köller gallery, December 3, 2008, lot 1211 then June 18, 2009, lot 1190.

The only pair with two lights and ram head identified, probably ours, is reproduced in P. Siguret, Lo Stile Luigi XVI, Milan, 1965 (Seligmann collection).
