Condition

Examined in the frame. This work is in original unlined condition, with minor rippling to the canvas. There are two patches adhered to the reverse. The varnish has yellowed. Widely patterned craquelure is present across the picture surface with a few minor areas of associated lifting. There are a few minor losses along the lower edge (visible in current framing) and the weave of the canvas is visible in the lower right corner. Under UV: heavy varnish fluoresces green. Older restorations are visible: a horizontal thin line of repair across Venus' eyes; a diagonal two inch area of inpainting across her feet (corresponding to aforementioned patches); in background at lower right and along right and lower edges.
