Catalogue Note
For its exceptional dimensions, outstanding composition and date of creation, Tentaisei Soushiko is undoubtedly one of the greatest pieces by Kazuo Shiraga still in private hands.
In April 1960, the artists of the Gutaï group, of which Kazuo Shiraga was a leader, organized a big outdoor festival. This artistic happening, remembered as the "Sky Festival", marked a major step in the international recognition of the artistic movement now considered as one of the most important of the second half of the 20th century.
While some of the participating artists hung their creations on helium balloons for a few days above the Takashimaya Pavilion in Osaka, Shiraga spent his time working on Tentaisei Soushiko, which he only exhibited on May 10, 1960, on the occasion of the 4th Contemporary Art Exhibition of Japan, a travelling exhibition celebrating Japanese contemporary creation with the Metropolitan Art Museum of Tokyo as its first venue.
Part of one of the artist's most emblematic series, the Water Margin series, Tentaisei Soushiko draws inspiration from the epic of a very famous hero from Medieval China made popular in Japan through the etchings of Ichiyûsai Kuniyoshi. This saga attributed to Shi Nai'an tells the story of 108 thieves who rebelled against the corruption of the emperor's senior officials. Shiraga purposely entitled the largest formats (180x275cm) he made in the 60s with the name of the 36 heavenly heroes (or heavenly stars). Tentaisei Soushiko (LeiHeng in Chinese) is one of these heavenly stars: the Winged Tiger, a former blacksmith invested with exceptional powers and martial arts master. The reference book behind Shiraga's work published on the fringe of the great retrospective exhibition of 2009 in Amagasaki listed a total of 27 paintings made after the heavenly heroes, with only 10 created between 1959 and 1960 and only two still kept in private collections, among which Tentaisei Soushiko.
Shiraga's art reflects a desire to merge body and matter, medium and artistic gesture. By laying the canvas directly on the ground and using his feet to spread thick layers of paint that formed stunning impastos, Shiraga induced a new relationship to the work. "I wanted to paint as if it was a fight. Until I fell down from exhaustion", he once said. This fight with matter, this total involvement of the mind and body, as well as this extreme gestuality are particularly palpable in Tentaisei Soushiko. And the great international gallerist Rodolphe Stadler made no mistake about it when he acquired the work in 1960. ロット 4
