Sperone Westwater, New York Private Collection Christie's, New York, 19 May 2005, Lot 578 Acquired from the above sale by the present owner
"As with de Kooning or Bacon, Rothenberg understands that if painting is ultimately a reaction of the nervous system, the figure is the logical conduit for that expression." Michael Auping, Susan Rothenberg: Paintings and Drawings, Buffalo 1993, p. 21
This work is in very good condition overall. The canvas is unlined. There is evidence of handling and wear to the edges, including a faint network of tension cracks which are visible along all four edges. Under very close inspection and raking light, a network of minute drying cracks is visible across the upper left quadrant. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, there is no evidence of restoration. Unframed.
