Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. All elements appear stable and well intact. There is evidence of light dust accumulation and some minor surface soiling. There are a few scattered losses to the pigment, particularly noticeable at the top of the box construction on the left. Under close inspection, there are minor scattered hairline surface scratches and some scattered, minor surface scuffs resulting in a few, minor losses to the wood.

Catalogue Note

"I have claimed that it's the most aristocratic color in the world. Plus it is not black. Nothing is black. Nothing is one color. There are so many shadows and shades in it that are so subtle that it isn't quite black. But we, for a definition, for a label, call it black. It is very aristocratic. You can take almost anything and once it's black it has another meaning."  Louise Nevelson
