Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. The sheet is hinged intermittently verso to the board and very slightly undulated. The impastoed peaks appear stable and well intact. The irregular pigment application and surface texture are consistent with the artist's working method and choice of medium. There is evidence of a few, minor creases to the sheet particularly along the left vertical edge and top center horizontal edge, likely from the way it was affixed to the board. Under close inspection, there is evidence of minor wear and handling to the edges and corners of the sheets and a few of the corners are very slightly dulled. Only visible under very close inspection and raking light, there is evidence of a few, stable hairline pigment cracks to the top right corner and a very minor, unobtrusive pinpoint loss to the pigment at the lower right 3 inches from the horizontal edge. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, there is no evidence of restoration. Framed.

Catalogue Note

"I realized that a couple of things were happening in my work. Color is one of the most fundamental; it’s a fundamental part of painting, but also one of the most adventurous aspects." Sam Gilliam
