Catalogue Note

Having shown at numerous prestigious exhibitions including the Venice Biennale and Documenta (13), Haegue Yang’s original practice enjoys widespread critical acclaim. Although her work is difficult to categorize within the traditional boundaries of mediums, her sculptures, installations, performances and collages share a common point of departure in their use of household objects that have been reconfigured into artworks which seem at once foreign and familiar. Nosy Clown – Manganese Carbonate exemplifies this in its simultaneously futuristic and contemporary appearance, using ordinary objects including light bulbs, knitting, chains and papier-mâché in what becomes an almost otherworldly entity. Yet these unusual sculptures often display subtle anthropomorphic qualities, not least in their mannequin-like appearance and the presence of wheels that suggest they can move around freely. Activating the poetic potential of the everyday with a unique aesthetic appearance, Nosy Clown – Manganese Carbonate is an intriguing example of Haegue Yang’s captivating body of work.
