Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. There is light evidence of wear and handling along the edges. There is a vertical 3-inch area of discoloration along the right edge, 11-inches from the top. There are two other vertical areas of discoloration: one that runs along the lower left edge, 2 inches from the edge, and another that runs 1.75 inches from the right in the white band. There is a pinpoint orange media accretion in the upper third of the red ban, 1.75-inches from the left edge. The canvas is lightly soiled. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, the aforementioned 3-inch area of discoloration fluoresces darkly. Framed.

Catalogue Note

"Generally, one may characterize the works of the late sixties as being subject to a relentless paring down to the essential elements of painting. The coltish whimsy of the early works is gone, and in its place is a grave monumentality. Movement is slower; forms are larger and simpler. Fewer decisions are made, but greater deliberation goes into each decision."
