Catalogue Note
“I grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and the DIA, the Detroit Institute of Art, had a really great German Expressionist collection. Just seeing those paintings, I really responded to Otto Dix, Kirchner—that way of dealing with space in a very constructed way...There is a way that American paintings deal with space, maybe coming out of abstraction, post-war abstraction, where there’s a kind of vastness.” Dana Schutz
