Catalogue Note

"These paintings depict an Arcadian ideal. The woods and hills, streams and cottages of a pre-modern world conjure up connections with well-known 19th century works and feelings for a time ensconced in a romantic sensibility. Sometimes these landscapes are rendered in negative, and they are often exhibited alongside video, wall texts and photographs that create the incongruous combination of which the early surrealists were so fond." David Thorp, "Artist in The Landscape," in Exh. Cat., London, Whitechapel Gallery, Ugo Rondinone – zero built a nest in my navel, 2006, p. 275
