Condition

Colour: The colour in the catalogue illustration is fairly accurate. Condition: This work is in very good condition. The sheet is hinged verso to the backing board in the two upper corners and undulates slightly. The upper edge of the sheet is unevenly cut. There are artist's pinholes along all four edges. Close inspection reveals a tiny dogear to the lower right hand corner tip and some minute nicks in intermittent places along all four extreme edges. Further close inspection reveals light creasing in places to the extreme edges, most notably to the lower left corner. Very close inspection reveals some tiny specks of paint flaking to the areas of slightly thicker paint, most notably to the leaves on the trees.

Catalogue Note

“Starting in 1947, he created a series of Arab paintings which celebrated their alternative universe of values that countered the European outlook…This newest Dubuffet species is comprised of people at one with their surroundings. He described such individuals as identifying themselves with 'wind, trees, rivers', in other words, their lives demonstrate “the continuity of all things in the world” (Mark Rosenthal, ‘Jean Dubuffet: Master Disrupter’, in: Exh. Cat., New York, Acquavella Galleries, Jean Dubuffet: Anticultural Positions, New York 2016, pp. 16-18).
