Condition

Colour: The colour in the catalogue illustration is fairly accurate. Condition: This work is in very good condition. Close inspection out of the frame reveals some frame rubbing and slight discolouration and a few tiny specks of loss to all four extreme edges. Further very close inspection reveals two short and faint scuffs; one to the dark green pigment to the lower left quadrant and one to the teal pigment to the upper centre of the right hand edge. Extremely close inspection reveals a few minute spots of wear to the extreme lower right hand corner and a tiny speck of loss to the lime green pigment in the centre of the bottom edge. No restoration is apparent when examined under ultra-violet light.

Catalogue Note

“The form and colour harmonies that appear on my canvas influence the direction in which the work subsequently develops. Just as the ‘truth’ of certain characters shapes the novel’s development contrast to the writer’s wishes and pre-established plan, I obey the demands of movement first expressed with desire and lucidity before gradually becoming their prisoner” (Maurice Estève cited in: Exh. Cat., Paris, Germain Viatte, Catalogue de l'exposition Maurice Estève, 2015, p. 7).
