Condition

Colour: The colour in the catalogue illustration is fairly accurate, although the paper tone is lighter and brighter and the greens are brighter and more vibrant in the original. Condition: This work is in very good condition. The sheet is hinged verso to the backing board in numerous places and undulates slightly. The two vertical edges and the lower edge are deckled. Extremely close inspection reveals two minute specks of foxing towards the lower left hand corner tip.

Catalogue Note

“Diedrich Diederichsen has applied the term Selbstdarsteller – which he translates as ‘self performer’ – to identify the particular type of self-promotion that the artist adopts. This hovers deliberately between role-play and expressivity, appropriation and authenticity, complicating what might otherwise be dismissed as an anachronistic display of artistic bravura” (Jessica Morgan, ‘Saint Martin’, in: Exh. Cat., London, Tate Modern, Martin Kippenberger, 2006, p. 12).
