Linke title: Grande meuble d'appui Soleil.
This is an iconic and intriguing Linke model that appears to have been a collaboration with Linke and one of his craftsmen Charles Alix (1846-1906). It is thought that Alix worked for Linke and in circa 1900 became an independent maker in his own right and subsequently, in 1906 the rights to the Alix models were taken over by Linke who could then sign it as his own as with the present lot. As in the case after the death of Léon Messagé, Linke was always meticulous in obtaining the rights to others work and the record of a transaction with Alix's estate is recorded on the relevant register page as 'Le 1er a été acheté tout fini a la Maison Alix'.
Two other Alix models by Linke are recorded, register numbers 49 and 1658. In terms of retail price, the 6,500 French francs of 1901 had risen to 48,000 by the 1927 revision.
Two comparable models have been sold, the first by Christie's New York, 16 April 2015, lot 49 (sold 161 000$), the second by Sotheby's, London, 3 October 1997, lot 309.
