Catalogue Note

The present cigarette case is a superb example of Fabergé's ability to transform the earlier Louis XVI style into the vernacular of its time: with guilloché enamelling in stunning, vibrant orange adorning a modern smoking accessory.  For a nearly identical cigarette case, enamelled in royal blue, with similarly decorated borders by Fabergé formerly in the collection of Mr and Mrs Lansdell K Christie, please see J. McNab Dennis, 'Fabergé's Objects of Fantasy'The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, New York, March 1965, p. 281, n. 1.
