Catalogue Note

Larry Rivers is one of the most exuberant painters of the New York school. He began his career in the inter-war period and went on to create an impressive body of striking artworks.

Although he influenced many American painters, Larry Rivers has for a while remained little known in France. Accused of “painting-report”, River’s art splits up, overlaps and erases the image. Going against the stream of Pollock’s and de Kooning’s abstract expressionism, Rivers, which talent is now widely acknowledged, built his work around pop imagery.
