Catalogue Note

The second painting repeats a painting by Andries Both in the Anhaltiche Gemäldegalerie in Dessau (inv. 663).

Andries Both painted and made drawings principally of genre and street scenes, situated around taverns or outside, like the present. His works often present a humoristic side mixed with an objective vision of the often cruel reality; they represent in large treatments the lower sides of Italian daily life in the 17th Century.
Born in Utrecht, Andries Both left for Italy in 1632. There he is first documented in Venice, and later in Rome between 1635 et 1641. It is there that he meets Pieter van Laer, who is also active in the same town, between 1624 and 1639, and whose influence is clearly visible in Both’s œuvre. They also both frequented the Accademia di San Luca.
In 1642, at the time that Andries Both was making plans to return home together with his brother and colleague Jan Both, on the way from a party he fell into a canal in Venice and tragically drowned.
