Condition
This work is in good condition and ready to hang. The canvas is unlined. Ultra-violet light reveals scattered strokes of retouching through the sky and near the upper part of the left and right edges. In the lower half of the composition the varnish fluoresces, making the surface difficult to read under U.V. light, however there do not appear to be notable retouchings in this area. Part of the date next to the signature is lightly rubbed.

Catalogue Note
Cannicci studied at the Arts Academy in Florence. He was influenced by the Macchiaioli, mainly Telemaco Signorini and Giovanni Fattori. He painted many rural scenes animated with peasants and animals, which won him public and critical acclaim. For health reasons he retired in Castel San Gimignano, a small village located near the famous mediaeval city of San Gimignano, the high towers of which are visible in the background of the picture presented here. Scenes with turkeys are frequent in Niccolo Cannicci's oeuvre, for instance La guardianella di tacchini (1885), Meriggio, or La guardiana di tacchini, a large canvas painted in 1888, probably that exhibited at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition. It shows a young peasant girl tending an important group of turkeys which dominate the composition. In our picture, there are fewer turkeys but they are very present.
