Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. The front of the proper left foot is missing. There is an open crack is running from the crotch, travelling up to the torso and higher up to the top of the head. Beautiful brown patina with earthy areas throughout.

Catalogue Note

Tant par la géométrisation de ses volumes que par sa dimension et ses ornementations corporelles, cette œuvre s’apparente très étroitement à la statue Sénufo de l’ancienne collection Tristan Tzara (Loudmer, Paris, 24 novembre 1988, n° 203). Utilisées par les devins de la société féminine du Sandogo, les statuettes madeö étaient considérées comme le support des relations entre les individus et les esprits. Ici, la saisissante dynamique des formes est mise en valeur par les nuances de la patine sombre, profonde.
