This mask is one of very few examples that reflect the adoption of the goli cult in Guro country. Although originally practiced by the neighbouring Wan, the goli was primarily known amongst the Baule whose masks relating to this institution were celebrated very early on in Western collections. Although the kwan kple of the Baule and the konon buene of the Guro have the same ambivalent character - revealed by an anthropomorphic face with goat’s horns set above it - they differ in their ornamentation.
The present work is differentiated by the pared down quintessence of the form, embodied in the tension of the curves and counter-curves, the characteristic pattern of the tripartite coiffure and the scarifications. These features allowed Fischer and Homberger to attribute this ancient mask to the Guro while during the exhibition and in the accompanying book Die Kunst der Guro Elfenbeinküste (Museum Rietberg, 1985).
