Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Tiny marks, nicks and scratches to wood throughout due to its use over the years. Fine brown patina. Number 1517 is handwritten in white under the object.

Catalogue Note

Le style de ce porteur de coupe Kanyok est caractéristique de l’œuvre du maître sculpteur Kadyaat-Kalool qui était actif à la charnière entre le XIXe et le XXe siècle. Le corpus de cet artiste est principalement conservé dans les collections muséales : un au Ethnologisches Museum de Berlin (acquis par Frobenius en 1904, inv. n° III.C.19980) et deux au Musée Royal de l’Afrique Central de Tervuren (inv. n° EO.1948.3.1 acquis avant 1918 et inv. n° EO.0.0.28466 acquis avant 1925). Cette œuvre s’impose par l’exécution raffinée du visage et par la qualité de la construction transcendant la simple fonction de récipient.
