Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Beautiful remain f the polychromy throughout the mask. Some marks, nicks, scratches and wear throughout to the patina. The proper right wing of the somital bird has been broken and glued.

Catalogue Note

Dès les années 1950, Maesen avait identifié les caractéristiques hautement originales de l'art des Holo, dont l'histoire se rattache (aux XVIe-XVIIe siècles) à la migration des peuples du Kwango, du Kwilu et du Kasaï. Témoin de l’importance accordée aux oiseaux migrateurs chez les Holo, ce masque s’impose par sa puissance tant sculpturale que picturale.
