Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Both feet are missing, and some cracks and hairline cracks are visible to the proper left side with a loss of material to the lower abdomen just under the proper left hand. Fine brown patina with white speckled throughout.

Catalogue Note

Si la production de statuettes chez les Baulé est abondante, il est toutefois exceptionnel que leurs créations rompent délibérément avec les canons en vigueur. Dans un corpus d’œuvres où dominent la douceur moelleuse du modelé et la rondeur des volumes, le style de cette statue, à l’évidence ancien, est atypique et manifeste une remarquable originalité. Il est assurément l’œuvre d’un artiste de grand talent, sûr de son indépendance esthétique. En atteste la conception plastique singulière de cette statue particulièrement visible dans le visage allongé et anguleux qui, sous le front bombé, tend même vers l’abstraction géométrique illustrant des valeurs graphiques très affirmées.
