"The typology of sculpted pulleys in Côte d’Ivoire is relatively complex and makes full use of a vast repertoire, bringing together humans, genies and animals [...] more often than not with only the head represented" (Falgayrettes-Leveau, Au fil de la parole, 1995, p. 168). This Guro heddle pulley, formerly in the Henri Bigorne collection, beautifully illustrates the refinement and culmination of this corpus of miniatures. In its rare combination of anthropomorphic traits - those of an elephant and a buffalo - the head showcases the epitome of Guro style, playing on the tension of curves and counter-curves. It is offset by the deep patina, highlighting the elegance of the fine trunk, horns and coiffure.
