Description
- Wagner, Richard
-- S. Spencer, "Wagner and Gaetano Ghezzi", dans The Wagner Journal, vol. 1 (mars 2007) et The Guardian, "Wagner. Public Genius with a Private Passion for Bustles, Bows and Bodices", The Guardian, 1er mars 2007 (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2007/mar/01/germany.classicalmusic). -----------------------------------Cataloguing in English 1 page, 8vo (c.22 x 14cm), annotated by the recipient on the integral blank leaf, including a lengthy list of prices, Bayreuth, 1 December 1873, light browning and small stain to top margin. the recipient [Gaetano Ghezzi in Milan], addressed merely as "Cher Monsieur", giving him a list of presents that he would like to give Cosima on the 25 December, asking him to seek out in particular something graceful for her to wear round the house of an evening, for example a rich and extravagant jacket, which would create a great effect when laid out as a gift, explaining that his wife has been confined to the house this winter, and deprived of social intercourse ("...je voudrais quelque chose de gracieux pour négligé de soir à la maison, par exemple une jacquette ou pareille chose, riche même un peu extravagante, pour faire son effet quand cela est étalé en cadeau, des parfumeries etc enfin de[s] gracieusetés..."), impressing upon him that the gifts have to arrive at Bayreuth by the 20 December. UNPUBLISHED. Only a summary of the letter appears in the Sämtliche Briefe, based on a 1928 dealer's catalogue. In her diary entry for 24 December, Cosima recorded: "At 5:30pm, distribution of presents; to me, too, R gives lovely gifts, some splendid Chaillo[n] things to wear indoors, and he is pleased that they suit me and please me" (including a "jacquette turque"). Charlotte Chaillon was a dressmaker who ran her business in Milan with her husband Gaetano Ghezzi . A subsequent request to Ghezzi in January 1874 for many more luxurious silk and satin dresses and underwear (which Cosima does not mention) has led to speculation that they were for himself to wear.
